Golden Rule Insurance Company (NYSE: UNH) provides health insurance, health savings accounts, short-term health plans, and supplemental Medicare insurance for individuals and families. The company offers co-pay plans, high-deductible plans, and basic plans, as well as insurance for the self-employed. Golden Rule Insurance was founded in 1940 by Michael and Mary Rooney in the basement of their Lawrenceville, Illinois home. The company's headquarters are technically in Lawrenceville, however its principal operations have been in Indianapolis since the mid 1970s. The company is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, which acquired it in 2003 in a cash deal valued at $500 million.
